Covington woman accused of vehicular homicide in death of 8-year-old

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A Covington woman was accused of vehicular homicide in connection with the death of an 8-year-old.

According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers responded to a crash on Highway 40 just east of Hurd Road. The car, a 2009 Toyota Camry, ran off the road and struck a tree while approaching a left-hand curve. 8-year-old Jewel Leger of Covington, who was riding in the front seat and was unrestrained, died in the crash.

LSP officials said toxicology tests were taken from the driver, 39-year-old Candace Leblanc of Covington. Leblanc’s blood allegedly contained impairing drugs at the time of the crash.

Leblanc was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Facility on the following charges:

  • Vehicular homicide
  • No child restraints
  • Possession of alcoholic beverages in motor vehicles
  • Driver must be licensed
  • Careless operation

The crash remains under investigation.
