South Side school unveils $5.5 million athletic field upgrade

CHICAGO — A Chicago Public School on the city’s far south side has a lot to celebrate this fall.

The Percy Julian High School Jaguars celebrate their homecoming Thursday. The school’s sports teams are also hoping to gain a more competitive edge, thanks to a multimillion investment into the school’s athletic field.

The brand new $5.5 million athletic field opened up to the school and community in August. The new field can accommodate football, soccer, lacrosse, and track and field. It hadn’t been updated since Julian opened decades ago in September of 1975.

“Investing in our children, our future, right here from the girls flag football to the Lady Jaguars to this male football team, this is what we do invest in our students ,” CPS interim CEO and Superintendent Dr. Macquline King said.

21st Ward Alderman Ronnie Mosley hopes enhancements like the new field remind students that they deserve the best.

“We are making sure we are putting in the best to you so that we can get the best out of you,” Mosely said.
