Gretna man killed in Plaquemines Parish crash on LA 39

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A crash in Plaquemines Parish claimed the life of a Gretna man, according to Louisiana State Police.

Around 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, LSP troopers were called to the scene of single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 39 near Water Plant Road.

The investigation revealed 56-year-old Ryan Riley was the passenger in a GMC Sierra headed south on the highway when for unknown reasons, the driver ran off the roadway, overturning the vehicle.

Troopers report Riley was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and suffered serious injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver, who was also not wearing a seatbelt, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where they are listed in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation as toxicology results are pending.

“Far too often, Troopers see the tragic results of preventable crashes. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing seatbelts correctly can significantly improve your chances of survival and reduce the severity of injuries,” said LSP Troop B.
