BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Letlow responded to President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Tylenol could cause autism.
On Monday, Trump said women should not take acetaminophen, commonly known by the brand name Tylenol, during their pregnancy.
“All pregnant women should talk to their doctors for more information about limiting the use of this medication while pregnant. So ideally, you don’t take it at all, but if you have to, you can’t tough it out … probably, you’re going to end up doing it,” Trump said.
Letlow commented on the president’s suggestion.
“I’d have to go do some research on it,” she said. “I trust the president, I trust the secretary, and we’ll definitely do some more reading on what they provide as far as what those new guidelines will be.”
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists shared that “acetaminophen remains a safe, trusted option for pain relief during pregnancy.” The association also stated there is no clear evidence linking use to fetal development.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday a label change initiative for Tylenol bottles to reflect that it may be associated with an increased risk of autism.
