Abilene offers free larvicide to combat West Nile Virus

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The City of Abilene is stepping up efforts to stop the spread of West Nile Virus by applying larvicide treatment in public areas.

Larvicide targets breeding sites, preventing mosquito larvae from developing into adults. Along with city treatments, free larvicide tablets are available at the Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District, located at 850 North 6th Street, for residents to use in standing water sources that can’t be drained, such as ponds and birdbaths.

“Even when our teams spray or apply treatments, we often continue to trap large numbers of mosquitoes in the same areas if standing water is left untreated on private property,” said Annette Lerma, Director of Public Health. “Every resident’s action makes a difference in the fight against West Nile Virus.”

Recent mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus at multiple locations across the city, including:

  • Valentine Park in the 1300 block of Pioneer Drive
  • The Abilene Parks & Recreation Administration building, 600 block of Walnut Street
  • The Environmental Recycling Center, 2200 block of Oak Street
  • Near Abilene Fire Station 8 in the 5600 block of Buffalo Gap Road

Symptoms of West Nile Virus can include fever, headache, body and joint pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it may lead to meningitis or encephalitis. Health officials recommend prevention steps such as using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, limiting outdoor activity during peak mosquito hours, and draining standing water around your yard.
