“Healthy aging is about staying active, engaged, and informed,” said Stephanie McCorkle, nurse practitioner at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Texarkana. “Whether it’s managing chronic conditions, staying socially connected, or prioritizing mental health, small changes can make a big difference.”
According to a press release, studies have shown that walking a few times per week can reduce the risk of death by up to 16%, with overall mortality risk being reduced by 15% for every additional 1,000 steps per day.
Mental health can also benefit from being both physically and socially active. Almost 80% of individuals who exercise weekly say their mental health is “very good or excellent” compared to those who do not.
Individuals can take these steps for healthy aging:
- Stay active – aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily.
- Eat well – focus on whole foods, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.
- Socialize – maintain relationships with friends, family, and community groups.
- Check-ups – get regular health screenings to catch issues early.
- Prioritize mental health – stay mentally stimulated by reading a book, or take the time to learn new skills and hobbies.
“It’s never too late to start making healthier choices,” McCorkle said. “Your future self will thank you.”
