Rockford property taxes paid? Here’s where your money went

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — If you’re a Rockford homeowner, the second installment of your property taxes were due Friday, Sept. 5.

You may pay Winneago County directly. Or, you may escrow your taxes, meaning your lender makes your payments on your behalf. Either way, do you ever wonder exactly where property taxes collected from Rockford homeowners go?

Based on a home with an assessed value of $150,000, here’s a breakdown of how much each taxing body collects, ranked from highest to lowest for the year 2024.

1. Rockford Public School District 205

Tax Rate: 4.7899
Taxes Paid: $2,395.61
The largest slice of your property tax bill goes to the local school district, supporting education, staff, and facilities.

2. City of Rockford

Tax Rate:  1.9303
Taxes Paid: $965.15
City services like police, fire, public works, and administration are funded here.

3. Rockford Park District

Tax Rate:  0.8132
Taxes Paid: $406.47
Parks, recreation centers, and community programs benefit from this portion.

4. Winnebago County

Tax Rate:  0.6730
Taxes Paid: $336.50
County-level services including courts, health departments, and administration.

5. Community College District 511

Tax Rate:  0.4719
Taxes Paid: $235.95
Supports Rock Valley College and other educational initiatives.

6. Rockford Public Library

Tax Rate:  0.3230
Taxes Paid: $161.50
Funds library operations, collections, and public programming.

7. Four Rivers Sanitation Authority

Tax Rate: 0.1253
Taxes Paid: $62.65
Maintains wastewater treatment and sanitation infrastructure.

8. Rockford Township

Provides general assistance and property assessments.

9. Winnebago County Forest Preserve

Supports conservation, trails, and nature preserves.

10. Rockford Township Road

Maintains township roads and bridges.

11. Greater Rockford Airport Authority

Funds operations and improvements at the Rockford airport.

Total Property Taxes: $4,738.38

Note: Property taxes are calculated using an assessed value of one-third the market value ($50,000), and rates are applied per $100 of assessed value.
