Gov. Shapiro says Pennsylvania ‘prepared’ should Trump send National Guard

(WHTM) — As President Donald Trump escalates his use of the National Guard in major American cities, some wonder whether he will focus his eyes on Pennsylvania.

The president has used troops and federal agents in recent months as part of what he said is a mission to fight crime and ramp up deportations. After Los Angeles, D.C. and Chicago, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he’s “prepared” should Philadelphia, or any city in the state, be next.

“I think what the president’s doing is wrong. I think what the president’s doing injects chaos in communities,” Shapiro said Monday in Philadelphia.

He added, “I’m not going to get into the specifics. I can tell you we are prepared.”

Shapiro did not say how the state is preparing, nor is there any indication the Trump administration plans to supersede the governor’s authority and deploy the National Guard in the state.

The governor has tried to trade barbs with the president for weeks by attacking the deployments. Earlier this month, he said in a post on X the president would need to go through him should he try to “undermine Pennsylvanians’ fundamental freedoms.”

The White House downplayed Shapiro’s statements, though did not say whether the president plans to send troops to the state.

“Another wannabe presidential candidate is desperate to get into the news cycle by attacking the president’s highly successful operations to drive down violent crime,” said Abigail Jackson, a White House spokeswoman. “This won’t fool the American people and Pennsylvanians who elected President Trump on his law and order platform.”

Shapiro, meanwhile, said fatal gun violence is already down 42% in the state through community-based prevention programs.
