Shapiro rebuffs Trump’s call to end mail-in voting

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A day after President Donald Trump said he would “lead a movement” to end voting by mail, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said the president cannot change how the state votes.

In a social media post, Trump falsely claimed the United States is the only country to use mail-in ballots and said he would sign an executive order ending the practice.

“But Donald Trump can sign whatever the hell executive orders he wants to sign and make a show out of whatever he wants,” Shapiro said on Tuesday. “But he can’t change the Constitution with an executive order, and the Constitution gives the authority to set our election rules to the states.”

Shapiro noted both Democrats and Republicans passed mail-in voting into state law. A state’s government is the only place to change how its elections are run because the Constitution explicitly gives states that power. Each state also allows smaller jurisdictions, such as counties, to run their own elections.

Still, the president inaccurately described states as “merely an ‘agent’ for the federal government in counting and tabulating the votes.”

Congress does have limited authority to alter the way states run congressional and presidential elections. However, the president controls no elections in the United States.

Shapiro said since Pennsylvania added mail-in voting, millions have voted by mail. He noted Trump lost some elections and won others, just as Democrats have.

“We will once again have free and fair, safe and secure elections,” Shapiro said. “People will be able to vote by mail or people will be able to vote in person.”

Trump himself has regularly voted by mail, and he previously encouraged his supporters to do the same. Still, the president called mail-in ballots a “complete and total disaster” that must end.

His call for change comes as the federal government has ramped up its effort to get election information from states. This month, Spotlight PA reported the Justice Department sent a letter to the Pennsylvania Secretary of State requesting voter registration information from 2022 through 2024, including voters’ personal information such as Social Security and driver’s license numbers.

The federal government said the request is part of an effort to enforce election law.
