Abzal, affectionately known to the Chicago boating community as Captain Bill, is in his element as he’s seen enjoying life aboard his boat on the open waters of Lake Michigan in the photo.
“That’s a great picture of him and that shows us what kind of man he was. I mean, who can’t love a guy like that?” Abzal’s friend Joe Perry said.
Abzal died one week ago, and Perry proudly put up the photo of his dead friend as a heartfelt tribute, a lasting reminder of the countless memories they shared and the impact he had on everyone who knew him.
“He was the first one to help you launch your boat in and just a great, great spirit on the dock. We’re going to miss him terribly,” Perry said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner determined Abzal died from drowning, but has also ruled his death as a homicide.
While the circumstances surrounding his death are unclear, sources close to the investigation told WGN News detectives are searching for at least four people.
For the boating community, the dock feels empty without him. It’s a space that’s hard to fathom without his larger than life presence.
No arrests have been made at this time, but detectives are looking for two men and two women who they believe are involved in Abzal’s death.
