Summer break was extended for some kids in southeast Minnesota after a school district discovered widespread mold in several classrooms.
KAAL-TV reports that Wabasha-Kellogg School District was forced to delay the start of the new school year to Thursday. However, the district has now delayed the first day again, now setting it for Tuesday.
The district says the mold was found last weekend in several elementary classrooms. It then contacted its health and safety firm, which tested and started cleaning the mold.
The issue is being blamed on extreme summer humidity, heat and rain, which district officials say caused problems at other school and county offices.
“We recognize that this delay may create childcare challenges and scheduling conflicts, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” Superintendent Nels Onstad said. “However, we cannot in good faith begin the school year until we are confident that our classrooms are safe for students and staff.”
