Head coach Ben Johnson said Caleb Williams, Joe Thuney, Grady Jarrett, Kevin Byard III and Cairo Santos will don the “C” on their jerseys during his opening statement at Halas Hall Tuesday.
Williams and Byard are the only players to retain their captaincy from last year’s roster under the leadership of Matt Eberflus.
“We’ll have those five, and then, we’ll also have a weekly Captain as well,” Johnson said. “It’s good to see those guys rally around that crew. [I have] a lot of respect for that voting process. To be well-respected by your peers like that goes a long way.”
Having at least five team captains is a trend that has carried over from when Johnson was on the Detroit Lions coaching staff under Dan Campbell. The Lions had five captains in 2021 when Campbell took over, and six captains each year from 2022 to the present day.
The number of captains with each unit also remains nearly the same. Every year since 2021, Detroit has had at least two captains on offense and defense, with one on special teams. In most cases, the captains have included a quarterback (Jared Goff), offensive lineman (Frank Ragnow/Penei Sewell), defensive lineman (Charles Harris/Aidan Hutchinson), linebacker (Alex Anzalone), and a non-kicker/punter (Jalen Reaves-Maybin/Grant Stuard).
This time last year, the Bears named eight captains, which included DJ Moore, Cole Kmet, Marcedes Lewis, Tremaine Edmunds, TJ Edwards and Jaylon Johnson, on top of Byard and Williams.
The Bears open up against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football at Soldier Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. CT on Sept. 8.
