‘Inoperable firearm’ found by Pulaski County elementary student on school grounds

SOMERSET, Ky. (FOX 56) — Student resource officers and other Somerset law enforcement officials quickly sprang into action on Friday when a student went to get a soccer ball at Pulaski Elementary School, but found a gun instead.

Superintendent Patrick Richardson with Pulaski County Schools posted on social media about the discovery and wrote that the chief of the Somerset Police Department was also immediately notified when the gun was found.

District officials said the student had “discovered an inoperable firearm that appeared to have been in the woods for some time.”

According to the post from PCS, the gun was found to have been stolen from a nearby residence in 2021, per an investigation by Somerset police.

“I want to commend the student for their appropriate actions today, our staff and police department for their immediate response, and thank the Somerset Police Department for their assistance as well. The safety of our students remains our top priority.”

Officers reportedly thoroughly canvassed the school grounds following the discovery as an additional safety measure.
