Gene Lab shot the video. It shows the aftermath just minutes after a small plane from San Jose crashed into a field outside of Los Banos.
“I wasn’t expecting to see a crumbled piece of metal that had basically fallen from the sky nose dived into the ground,” said Leb.
He says the pilot of the plane was circling in the air for an hour before crashing around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
During that time, he says Los Banos Police were clearing possible landing spots.
“I believe it was a pop-warner football practice, and Los Banos Police went out there and evacuated the whole ballpark; they didn’t know what was coming.”
Fifteen minutes after the plane crashed, Leb and the first responders arrived at the crash site.
“When I got there, they were setting up crime scene tape,” Leb said.
Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke arrived by helicopter before witnesses were moved further away from the scene.
The identity of the pilot who was killed has not been released. The NTSB is handling the investigation.
