Head coach Kellen Moore said that Spencer Rattler will be the Black and Gold’s starting quarterback.
Rattler started two of the Saints’ preseason games and completed 30 passes for 295 yards with a touchdown, an interception, and a game-tying two-point conversion against Jacksonville.
“He’s just been consistent. He’s made some really good decisions throughout this whole entire process. His ability to make plays with his arm and his feet have certainly shown up. So, I’m really, really excited for Spencer. He’s earned this opportunity. He’s going to do a tremendous job for us. At the same time, we’re really fortunate that we have Tyler [Shough],” said New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore.
The rookie second-round pick has done a tremendous job of keeping the quarterback competition a close one by remaining aggressive when given opportunities to play.
Shough was impressive in his preseason debut against the Chargers with 15 completions for 165 yards with a 54-yard touchdown pass to Mason Tipton following a third-quarter pick-six.
Shough drew his first preseason start against Jacksonville and finished the preseason with 12 completions for 102 yards with an 11-yard rushing touchdown in Saturday’s matchup with the Broncos.
Love the development that he’s had over the course of this entire offseason. He’s done a number of things for the first time in his career. Just navigating that is an important aspect when you’re younger at quarterback, to let the whole process play itself out. I thought he capped it off with an excellent performance against Denver on the last preseason game,” added Moore.
The Saints open the 2025 regular season at home against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, September 7th. Kickoff is set for noon.
