David Pierce of Byhalia, Mississippi was killed just before midnight last Sunday at Lamar and American Way.
His brother, Chris Pierce, says David was killed when he got out of his car to help a stranger, a man who was passed out in a car in the center lane. He says they used flashlights to alert other cars.
When David and another brother went to check on the man, Chris says a dark gray Nissan Armada flew down the street, trying to beat a yellow light, and hit David, leaving him unconscious on the ground.
David would later succumb to his injuries in the hospital.
According to Chris, when the driver who was passed out in his car heard the noise, he woke up and drove away.
The Pierce family has dashcam footage and are doing everything they can to track down the SUV, including knocking on the doors of local businesses looking for surveillance footage.
Chris is unhappy with how the Memphis Police Department is handling the case, saying if he were killed on scene, they would have already found the man.
“It broke me, but I’m gonna tell you, I really haven’t been able to grieve. I shook today, I shook today,” Chris said. “I ain’t been able to grieve because I’m so mad at the Memphis Police Department. Six days, this guy’s been on the street with the ability to do the same thing he did to my brother to everybody else.”
Chris says doing the right thing and checking on someone in need shouldn’t cost you your life.
“I’ve seen so many people say you shouldn’t help people in Memphis, you shouldn’t help people. You shouldn’t change your heart just because of where you’re at. You should not have to change have to change who you are just because of where you’re at,” he said.
And as six days have gone by since his brother’s death, Chris is doing everything he can, knocking on doors and looking for surveillance footage to try to get justice for the brother that meant the world to him.
“He always took care of me when I was young,” Chris said. “He was the guy I went to on the weekend and hang out with and to hunt and fish. He took care of me, and he didn’t deserve this, so I’m here fighting for him.”
If you have any idea who was driving the dark gray Nissan Armada, please call the Memphis Police Department.
