Suspect detained after early-morning shooting near IU campus

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — An 18-year-old woman was taken into custody early Saturday morning after a shooting near the Indiana University campus left one person injured, according to police.

Indiana University Police Department dispatchers began receiving calls around 2:30 a.m. about a domestic-related incident near 10th Street and Walnut Grove. Responding officers found a person who had been shot in the leg. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

The suspect fled the scene in a gray 2010 Honda Accord, prompting officers to describe the vehicle and a possible direction of travel. Police believed the car was headed north on I-69 from Bloomington.

Around 3:44 a.m., Morgan County deputies located the vehicle at a gas station on Ohio Street in Martinsville. The woman was taken into custody without further incident and transported to Monroe County for questioning. A wrecker was called to impound the vehicle and place it in secure storage.

IU issued an emergency alert warning students and staff to avoid the area near 10th and Walnut Grove while officers investigated. The university later confirmed the scene was secure.

Neither the victim nor the suspect is affiliated with Indiana University. The Bloomingtonian is withholding the suspect’s name until police confirm it or formal charges are filed.

The case remains under investigation.
