Action Comedy, Road Thriller
In Bakersfield, female private eye Honey O’Donahue (Margaret Qualley) is on the case when a local death leads her into the shadowy world of a mysterious church cult run by none other than Captain America himself. Directed by Ethan Coen and co-written with Tricia Cooke, this pseudo-sequel to last year’s Drive-Away Dolls doesn’t have enough gas to get it over the hill, and instead, you’re left wondering what the point of any of the story even is. Performances are servicable with Qualley and Aubrey Plaza have the best chemistry in their scenes, but even at a whopping 90-minute runtime, it ends up not being satisfying enough for me to recommend seeing it in theaters.

Animated Adventure
The mythic adventure expands from the original 2019 film, as the stakes are ramped up, the scale is widened, and the animation and fighting deliver masterful, jaw-dropping sequences that kids will love. The first film is available to rent or on Peacock, and it certainly will be a great one to take the kids to. While it may be a longer runtime, Ne Zha II more than rewards its viewers with a surprising, funny, visually stunning adventure.

Ron Howard, Noah Pink
Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Ana de Armas, Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Brühl
Survival Thriller
Based on a real 1920s utopian experiment on Floreana Island, Eden centers around a group of families who are all trying to survive, but the trappings and ideas of the world they all sought to abandon have followed them. Ron Howard gives us a look into the best and worst of humanity, delivered by impressive performances all around, the standout being Ana De Armas. If you want to go to the theater and experience something unique amongst the sea of sequels and capes, then Eden is a perfect date night movie.

Animation, Comedy
From BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg comes Long Story Short, an animated family chronicle that spans generations of the Schwooper clan. Using non-linear storytelling, it flips between decades, 1950s to today, to capture the joys, chaos, and cultural nuances of Jewish life that are relatable, funny, and emotional. Exertly crafted with a unique and comforting animation style, Long Story Short brings heart, humor, and relatability in every episode and is my top recommendation of the weekend.

Documentary
This three-part Netflix documentary strips away the makeover montage to show the collision between reality TV’s dramatic flair and real-world consequences. Not only does the documentary showcase interviews with past contestants, medical teams, and one of the show’s trainers, revealing some of the most shocking moments of the show, and the cost of reality television in its early years.

Documentary
Devo revisits the iconic Ohio-based art-punk band, from their roots at Kent State to their global breakout with “Whip It.” Debuting at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, this is a documentary for Devo fans and not really anyone else. There is something to say about exploring the time period and inception of MTV that was really engaging, but otherwise, Devo doesn’t capture enough for me to think someone not aware of them would seek out and enjoy
