The suspect, Daniel Lynn Meinhart, was later identified as a known white supremacist gang member and was reportedly wanted on probation violations and had multiple felony warrants for his arrest.
In Nov. 2024, the U.S. Marshals Service was near 2100 South and 900 East working to apprehend Meinhart, who had various felony warrants for his arrest and was reportedly wanted for probation violations.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill today presented new information and shared that at the scene, Meinhart crashed into a light pole, disabling his car. When approached by officers, he refused to comply with their orders.
The officers believed they saw an object in his hands that could have been perceived as a gun. These circumstances led to the use of force, and Meinhart was shot multiple times by law enforcement. He was hospitalized but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
After reviewing all of the footage, Gill concluded that the officer’s use of force in shooting Meinhart was reasonable.
