Live! in the Community helps local double amputee

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Live! in the Community with the Cares Krewe partnered up with Shreveport’s McAlister’s Deli to surprise a deserving local.

Live! in the Community with the Cares Krewe received a heartfelt nomination from Nicole about her partner, David. David has faced a lifetime of challenges, as Nicole described his medical hurdles since he was 2 years old until the present.

The Krewe knew what we had to share some hope, smiles, laughter, and of course, our love for bamboozling locals. Sneakily, we coordinated with Nicole to ensure we met them at lunch at McAlister’s Deli in Shreveport.

At a very young age, David was in and out of hospitals, having been burned with hot bath water at the age of two. In 2018, he began battling issues with his left foot, and in January 2020, his left foot was amputated.

Although his doctors did not want him to go back to work, he could not stand sitting around, so he returned to work. Recently, in May 2025, David battled medical problems with his right leg, and after numerous infections, his medical team advised that they would need to amputate the right leg.

“How do you remain strong through it all?” asked Cares Krewe staff, Ya’Lisha.

“I just go on day by day,” said David.

“I don’t let anything stop me,” said David.

We had some items (a Saints t-shirt, a Visa gift card, a gift card from McAlister’s Deli, and a staycation at Live! Casino & Hotel) that may be helpful to them as they move forward to navigate life as a double amputee.

“So the journey begins with healing and learning how to navigate life as a double amputee. His spirits are great despite it all and not heritable to work. He is almost 3 weeks post op and is looking forward to being able to live his life pain-free,” shared Nicole.

David’s spirit, kindness, and outlook on life serve as a reminder to us all that, although hardships in our lives happen, it’s the way we handle the circumstances that truly matters.
