Electric scooter accident in Kearns, one day after deadly e-bike crash

KEARNS, Utah (ABC4) — Unified Police confirmed an incident involving an electric scooter and car at approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Unified Police Sergeant Amee Race confirmed a teenager was riding the scooter west bound on 4865 South near 4400 West when they were struck by a vehicle. The initial investigation indicated the scooter did not yield to traffic.

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with officials. The teenager was transported to the hospital for evaluation, but they were articulate and responding well. The crash is still under investigation.

This is the second accident this week involving motorized devices. A fatal accident involving an e-bike occurred in Riverton earlier this week.

Officials have stressed the importance of remembering legislation regarding electric vehicles like e-bikes, e-motorcycles, e-scooters, and golf carts.

Children under eight cannot ride these vehicles. Children ages eight to 14 must have a responsible person over the age of 18 present when operating these vehicles.

Local city ordinances determine the legality of riding golf carts on public roadways.

The e-bike classification contains three different categories:

Class 1: Pedal only, speeds of 20 mph.

Class 2: Pedal & throttle, speeds of 20 mph.

Class 3: Speedometer, pedal, and throttle, speeds of 28 mph.

Be aware that children under the age of 16 are prohibited from riding a Class 3 e-bike.

Anyone under the age of 21 riding an e-bike, e-motorcycle, or e-scooter is required to wear a helmet. While it’s not required for individuals older than 21 to wear a helmet when operating these vehicles, Officer Van Leeuwen with the Unified Police Department reminds the public, “It’s always a good idea to protect that brain bucket.”
