Mansfield improves fire protection rating, mayor thrilled

MANSFIELD, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The Mansfield Fire Department is making big moves in the community with the addition of a new station, improving their fire protection rating from class four to class three.

Mayor Thomas Jones said, “When you go from a four grading to a three, it definitely has a big impact for you. These five years, we’re going to be a three, but when we get to the next grading period, we’re going to have those things in order to be a one.”

An improved protection rating often results in lower property insurance rates which causes everyone to save some money.

“It’s a big accomplishment for my employees, the fire department, water department, and all the people who work in those departments. It’s also an achievement for this city,” said Mayor Jones.

Many factors go into providing fire safety. Pressure in water hydrants is imperative for fire prevention. Thanks to people like Tarus Chatman, the department is always prepared for emergencies.

“We check that daily to make sure that in any case of any type of emergency, especially fires, that we are ready and equipped to take care of those matters,” said Chatman.

Now with fire stations on each side of the railroad tracks, Mansfield officials say the city is a safer place for all.
