‘Meant to be’: Thomasville man wins $100,000 lottery prize

THOMASVILLE, N.C. (WGHP)– Dustin Shives, of Thomasville, woke up from a nap on Wednesday to find out he won a $100,000 prize in a second-chance drawing, according to an NC Education Lottery news release.

“It was a shock,” he said. “It couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Shives said he and his wife have started the process of buying a house.

“It’s like it was meant to be,” Shives said.

He found out he won his prize in the second of four $8 Million Money Maker Second Chance drawings when he got a notification from the lottery.

There were over 1.3 million total entries in the drawing.

“I thought it was a joke,” Shives said. “I kept thinking I was getting pranked.”

He arrived at lottery headquarters on Thursday to collect his prize.

After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $71,750.

In addition to the house, Shives plans to buy a car for his daughter.
