How the Providence Bridge Pedal will impact Portland’s Sunday traffic

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Providence Bridge Pedal is back this Sunday, which means commuters may need to find alternative routes if crossing over the Willamette River.

It also means riders need to be prepared for the scorching temperatures expected on Sunday.

While the annual ride offers cyclists a car-free way to enjoy the city, it will shut down vehicle traffic on the city’s nine bridges.

Below is a list of the closures with estimated reopening times, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation:

• Hawthorne Bridge: Eastbound will close at 6 p.m. Saturday for event setup and reopen at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
• Marquam Bridge: All lanes closed by 5 a.m., reopening by 1 p.m.
• Fremont Bridge: All lanes closed by 5 a.m., reopening by 1 p.m.
• Interstate 405: On-ramps to I-405 closed by 5 a.m., reopening by 1 p.m.
• U.S. 26: US 26 eastbound to I-405 southbound closed by 5 a.m., reopening by 1 p.m.
• U.S. 30: US 30 eastbound to I-405 southbound closed by 5 a.m., reopening by 1 p.m.
• SW Naito Parkway: Closed from SW Jefferson to NW Couch at 4 a.m., reopening from SW Jefferson to SW Harvey Milk at 10:30 a.m., and from SW Harvey Milk to NW Couch at 1 p.m.
• Ross Island Bridge: Westbound will close at 5 a.m. Sunday and reopen at 11 a.m.
• Morrison Bridge: Two eastbound lanes will close at 5 a.m. and reopen at 10 a.m.
• Sellwood Bridge: The southside sidewalk and bike lane will close at 6 a.m. and reopen at 9:30 a.m.
• Steel Bridge: Eastbound will close at 6:30 a.m. and reopen at 12:15 p.m.

On Saturday, riders received an email from event organizers to be well-hydrated before starting and to stay hydrated during the ride.

“Providence Bridge Pedal has added extra hydration stations to the route as well as ice and Gatorade at key locations and in the sweep vehicle,” Providence officials said in a release. “Tents with medics are stationed along the route – and there are several medics riding the route on bicycle.”

Since the event begins as early as 7 a.m., most participants should be off the course before the high heat of the day blankets the city.
