The crash happened just before 3 a.m. on Aug 5., in the 10400 block of Patriot Highway.
The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said that when deputies arrived, they found 41-year-old Quinton Howard from Spotsylvania. Medics took him to the hospital, where he later died.
During the investigation, the sheriff’s office’s Traffic Reconstruction Unit learned that Howard and another man were both trying to cross a section of Patriot Highway. That’s when the second man stopped walking partway, but Howard continued into oncoming traffic, where he was hit, according to deputies.
After the crash, the second man ran to the vehicle and began hitting the driver.
The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. The driver also required medical attention for the injuries he sustained during the assault.
The sheriff’s office added that the pair was wearing dark clothing while trying to cross the road, and where the crash happened was also unlit.
The investigation is ongoing.
