Deputies with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office have arrested Christina Laureen Willis, 27, of Batesville.
Willis is being charged with attempted murder, and with planting or placing a bomb or explosive, or weapon of mass destruction.
On June 20, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a suspicious package on a victim’s car. The victim removed the package and gave it over to deputies once they arrived.
June 23, the LCSO with the assistance of the Tupelo Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) reported that the package contained a homemade explosive device.
On Aug. 4, a federal search warrant was conducted by ATF, Panola County Sheriff’s Office, Tupelo Bomb Squad and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics at a residence on Highway 35 South in Panola County.
During their search, they said they discovered bomb-making materials homemade high explosive substances, firearms, narcotics and an explosive device found inside of the home.
The ATF will be presenting her case to a federal grand jury and she is expected to face multiple federal charges as well.
“I am very proud of the way all of our local, state, and federal agencies worked together during this investigation. With the support from all of the agencies involved, we were able to conduct a safe and professional investigation,” Lafayette County Sherriff Joey East said.
Willis is being held at the Panola County Jail and awaiting trial.
