Mississippi man, woman charged with abusing 1-year-old

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man and a woman are now behind bars after a one-year-old was found with unexplained injuries last Friday in Oxford, Mississippi, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Lafayette County Residents Teresa Mendez, 25, and Uriel Cruz, 26, are both charged with two counts of felony child abuse.

On May 30, deputies with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office say they were called to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford regarding a one-year-old child who had several unexplained injuries.

The child had to be taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital due to the severity of their injuries, deputies say.

During a follow-up investigation, Teresa Mendez and Uriel Cruz were both arrested and booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center.

On June 2, Mendez and Cruz were denied bond during a court appearance. They will remain in jail until the hearing at a later date.
