The City of Minneapolis is asking for feedback from residents on the future of the corner of 38th and Chicago.
City officials are holding an open house on Aug. 19 to hear from residents about the possibility of creating a pedestrian mall on Chicago Avenue between 37th and 38th Streets.
The alternative design would restrict through traffic and create a cul-de-sac and public plaza near The People’s Way at 3744 Chicago Avenue, according to a spokesperson for the city.
The concept of a pedestrian mall has been opposed by Mayor Jacob Frey, who cited disapproval from businesses in the area.
Earlier this year, the city council voted to override Mayor Frey’s veto of a legislative directive to further explore converting George Floyd Square into a pedestrian mall.
At the open house later this month, city officials will present their findings about the pedestrian mall alternative and their findings from a previous concept allowing through traffic.
The open house is happening in the Chicago Ave Shops at 3736 Chicago Avenue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
As of May of this year, the city had spent more than $2.2 million on the process of developing the corner, according to City Hall.
