BATON ROUGE, La (Louisiana First News)

Southern University is turning up the volume on student voices with the launch of WSUB 106.1 a brand-new student run radio station. More than just music WSUB will be a learning lab for mass communication students and a bridge between campus and the Baton Rouge community.

It’s a new day for Southern Universities voice in the community. On Friday the mass communication department unveiled WSUB 106.1 a rebranded, student run FM station with big plans for Baton Rouge and beyond.

Darrel Glasper says, “It gives them a start. It gives them an opportunity, which they have a lot of bright minds at Southern University. It gives them the right to be able to chart their own direction, to be able to write, to be control of the communication.”

Formally known as WTQT, the station is now a learning lab giving students the opportunity to gain hands on experience in live broadcasting, journalism, and media production.

“Oh, it’s going to be very positive because now they’re writing their own content mostly in the media. You see the negative parts of it, right? What is going on with our youth in America They need to understand that success don’t just start overnight.
Communicate what those things that is good with the university. What can be done? How people can change their lives and what really can it really be. There for them as resources.” Glasper says.

Still will have the opportunity to take classes this fall and as the transition continues the legacy of WTQT will continue.

Nicolette Gordon says, “WSU B will serve as a training ground for our students. Of course, they will have a chance to take introduction to radio. Of course, w t u t has a rich history in this community and so we’ll just going to continue that legacy.”

With the new sign unveiled WUSB will broadcast Jaguar with powerful voices in the community.

“You’ll expect to see us in the streets. And when I say on the streets in our community, you know, we are the culture and the community will get a chance to see exactly how that, I guess, translate in the years to come.” Gordon Says.

WSUB will show students it is more than just a station it is where the classroom will meet learning.
