Columbus Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director Chance Corbett has trained over 60,000 people in active shooter response, averaging one-to-two trainings each month.
He said he received multiple calls following the July 28 shootings, asking him to teach at local businesses and organizations.
In his trainings, Corbett tells people to think about what they would do at the places they frequent if they were in a dangerous situation.
His advice: get away if you can. If you can’t find a place to hide and try to lock the door and/or create a barricade to slow down the threat.
If you find yourself out of options, Corbett says keep going.
“If the person makes it into the area you’re in or surprises you don’t just give up. Don’t just lay down on the floor, try to get away, try to escape,” Corbett said. “If you have to fight back, fight for your life. Do everything you can to live through this.”
