According to Chicago police, a group of five people were walking on the sidewalk in the 7200 block of South Avers Avenue around 11:45 p.m. when three members of the group took out handguns and fired shots at the other two, an 18-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy.
Police say the 18-year-old boy was shot in the head and taken to an area hospital after being treated by the Chicago Fire Department. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The 16-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to his cheek, according to police, and was treated by CFD before being taken to an area hospital in good condition.
Meanwhile, the offenders fled the scene after firing the shots, but police say responding officers were able to place three people in custody, two males and one female. Police also recovered two firearms.
Detectives are investigating the incident, and police say charges are pending.
