Trump wants Senate to cancel August recess

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Congress has passed some of President Donald Trump’s top priorities in the first six months of the second Trump administration but with the August recess just around the corner, President Trump is calling on the Senate to cancel and stay in town.

August is typically a time for lawmakers to spend time in their districts and fundraise, but senators may have to put those plans on the back burner.

“Now we’ll go a little bit faster because maybe one of these weeks you just hold them all back,” said Trump.

However, August recess is the time Republicans would go back to their districts to do a victory lap for the big, beautiful bill. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is pushing back against this portrayal.

“Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” in my view is the worst and most destructive piece of legislation in this country,” said Sanders.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries agrees.

“What we see Republicans consistently do is act like a reckless rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s extreme agenda,” said Jeffries.

The Senate is scheduled to vote on six nominees Monday night but there remain some high-profile votes to be scheduled, including former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro for the top prosecutor job in Washington, D.C.
