Brownstown Fire Protection District responds to two cars in flash flooding on Sunday

BROWNSTOWN, Ill. (WCIA) — Sunday was a busy day for the Brownstown Fire Protection District as firefighters responded to several calls related to the weather.

As heavy rain fell in and around the town on Sunday, the district and others warned of life-threatening flash flooding and urged people to avoid the area and stay off the roads. Brownstown Road ended up being closed on the north end of town due to high water.

More than eight inches of rain fell on the town, officials said.

Wes Kistler, the Brownstown 2nd Assistant Chief, said that after initially investigating reports of downed power lines, firefighters ended up responding to two vehicles in floodwaters. They assisted one driver north of Brownstown and found a car upside down along Interstate 70.

“Crews completed door removal and found no occupancy and worked alongside the Fayette County Dive Team to search the stream and stream bank downstream,” Kistler said. “During the search, it was determined that the driver had been taken to another location prior to our arrival and the search was terminated.”
