Terrebonne Parish declares emergency ahead of storms

TERREBONNE PARISH, La (WGNO) — Residents across Terrebonne Parish sat at home, waiting for evening downpours. Some were pleasantly surprised to find out that the storms were lighter than first predicted.

“Nah, it ain’t going to be bad. No. It’s gonna be a little blowy. The wind’s going to blow a little bit, but that’s it,” resident William Fitch said.

While the storms were lighter than expected, an emergency declaration was declared by Parish President Jason Bergeron ahead of them just in case.

Bergeron says through this declaration the parish would be able to utilize federal resources if necessary.

“We just have this in place as just kind of a situation of have it and not need it than need it and not have it, but if something were to happen; if we needed to deal with any kind of resources, the declaration is the first thing,” Bergeron said.

On top of the declaration, Bergeron took several other precautionary steps such as working with his emergency operations center as well as making sure his parish’s 70-plus pumps are in operation.

He says outside of some early difficulties, everything was running smoothly.

“We had some water buildup and get into some roads today, but as soon as it quit raining, roads went down and ditches went down and so the system was doing what it was supposed to be doing,” Bergeron said.

He says his partnership with the levee and conservation district is a major factor in making sure the parish is prepared for whatever comes.

“It’s definitely a collaborative effort and a great job to everybody for working together,” Bergeron said.
