SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Thursday morning in rural Sullivan County.
Authorities responded to a 911 call around 1 a.m. on July 10 reporting a gunshot victim near the 800 North block of Shelburn. Upon arrival, officers discovered 30-year-old Ryan Gehring of Prairieton had been shot during a confrontation outside a private residence.
According to preliminary findings, Gehring was trespassing on the property and was repeatedly asked to leave by the homeowner. A physical altercation ensued, during which Gehring was shot.

An autopsy is scheduled for July 13, and the investigation remains active. Detectives with the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post, along with crime scene investigators and assisting troopers, are handling the case.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department and Sullivan County Coroner’s Office are also assisting. A full report will be submitted to the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office once the investigation is complete.
Gehring’s family has been notified.
