Two Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide in Rural Sullivan County

SHELBURN, Ind. — Sept. 22, 2025 — Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal shooting near Shelburn that left a husband and wife dead early Monday morning.

According to investigators, Sullivan County deputies responded to a 911 call shortly after 4 a.m. reporting a shooting at a residence in northern Sullivan County. When deputies and state troopers entered the home, they found 75-year-old Judy Sheffler dead and 81-year-old Keith Sheffler dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities said family members have been notified. Detectives with the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post are leading the investigation, with assistance from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, the county coroner’s office, and state police crime scene investigators.

Police said the investigation is ongoing but that no further information is currently being released.
