One dead, two hurt after Sunday morning explosion in Nicetown

(WPHL) — A woman is dead and two others are injured after an early morning explosion occurred in Nicetown.

The explosion occurred at 4:48 a.m. on Sunday on the 1900 block of West Bristol Street in Nicetown.

According to police, three row homes totally collapsed 10 minutes after the initial fire broke out.

The fire was under control by 6:33 a.m., leaving behind destruction and rubble in its wake.

In a post on X, the Philadelphia Fire Department said, “Just before 5 am, we responded to an explosion on Bristol St. in Nicetown. This became an all-hands response. There are 2 reported injuries and, sadly, one reported fatality. Placed under control at 6:33. Many partners still on scene & more info to come.”

Two women, ages 82 and 63, were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation and burn injuries.

Another woman was found, but she unfortunately did not survive. Her identity and age have not yet been revealed.

Mayor Cherelle has met with the families of the victims and says a fund has been set up.

At this time, officials are still working to figure out what caused the fire and explosion.
