Illinois gas tax set to hit over 48 cents per gallon tomorrow

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) —Rockford gas prices dropped slightly over the last week, but residents are bracing for the state’s annual gas tax increase to kick in tomorrow.

The latest report from GasBuddy said an average gallon of gas in the Rockford area currently costs $3.24.

The national average fell as well, down to the lowest price per gallon for the 4th of July weekend since 2021.

Despite tensions in the Middle East, oil prices have fallen after a ceasefire deal was announced between Israel and Iran last week.

But tomorrow, on July 1st, the annual Motor Fuel Tax inflation adjustment will rise to over 3 cents per gallon, bringing the per gallon tax to over 48 cents.

Illinois has the second-highest gas tax in the United States, behind California.

The tax on diesel is also increasing, to over 55 cents per gallon.
