Illinois drivers will pay more for gas starting Tuesday due to annual gas tax increase

Illinois drivers will be paying a little more for their gas starting Tuesday.

The automatic annual Motor Fuel Tax increase, put in place by the state to account for inflation under a law passed in 2019, kicks in on July 1, when several new laws and tax changes are set to go into effect in Illinois.

Per the Illinois Department Revenue, the tax for regular gasoline will go from 47 cents per gallon over the last fiscal year to 48.3 cents per gallon for the new fiscal year, an increase of 2.77%. For diesel fuel, the tax will rise from 54.5 cents per gallon to 55.8 cents per gallon, an increase of 2.39%.

So, how much more per fill-up will the average consumer spend?

Well, according to J.D. Power, smaller vehicles hold about 12 gallons of gas on average, while larger vehicles can hold 15 gallons or more. So, going by a 14-gallon tank as a middle number, regular gas will cost around 18 cents more per gallon, give or take, for Illinois drivers.

According to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in January 2025, Illinois has the second-highest gas tax rate in the country, lower than only California.
