Dylan Volantis named Baseball America’s national freshman of the year

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The honors keep rolling in for Dylan Volantis.

Already a consensus All-American, the Texas Longhorns’ freshman left-handed pitcher was named national freshman of the year by Baseball America, adding another postseason distinction for one of the best late-game pitchers in the country this past season.

He’s the fourth Longhorn to win the award after Greg Swindell (1984), Kirk Dressendorfer (1988) and Brooks Kieschnick (1991). He was also the only freshman to be included on Baseball America’s first-team All-America list.

Volantis was the Southeastern Conference freshman of the year and tied for 10th in NCAA Division I with 12 saves. He had a 1.94 ERA with a 0.88 WHIP and held opposing hitters to a .185 batting average.

Volantis was also named the freshman pitcher of the year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and a freshman All-American by Perfect Game. He was a finalist for national pitcher of the year and stopper of the year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Incoming catcher Carson Tinney was also named to the first team. He hit .348 with 13 doubles and 17 home runs for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and will join the Longhorns as a transfer next season.

Galvan named to third-team All-America slots

Texas junior catcher Rylan Galvan earned a pair of All-American honors. grabbing spots on the third team by the NCBWA and the ABCA.

Galvan was named a finalist for the Buster Posey Award, given to the country’s most outstanding collegiate catcher, and he smacked 15 home runs with a 1.065 on-base plus slugging percentage. He hit .296 and drove in 47 runs, all while handling a pitching staff that was No. 6 in Division I with a 3.71 ERA.

Galvan was a first-team all-Central Region selection by the ABCA.
