SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Kiwanis Club of Shreveport-Bossier honored five standout community leaders during its annual awards luncheon. From educators to emergency responders.
The Kiwanis Club of Shreveport Bossier honored five individuals not just for what they do, but also for who they are. Layperson of the year, Nell Shehee, says she didn’t expect the recognition but feels grateful to stand among true local heroes.
“Very grateful and shocked to receive this award and to be in the company of people who sacrifice their time and their efforts to make our community a better place,” said Shehee.
For Aniyah Brown, named firefighter of the year, the award is personal, and she says it serves as a message of empowerment.
“It means literally everything to me… That’s one of the biggest reasons why I came into this world, to let people that look like me know that they can do it, and not only can you do it, you can be the best at doing it,” said Brown.
Lieutenant Amy Bowman, lawperson of the year, says she’s proud to be recognized, but she gives the credit to her team.
“I’m really not doing anything any special or different, I have a great team of people around me that really focuses on community mental health and first responder wellness,” said Bowman.
Teacher of the year Chris Kourvelas says this experience has been humbling throughout his journey in education.
“During this whole process… It was something that was significant to me to be able to see and reflect on where I came from and where I am now in my career and who I am as a person,” said Kourvelas.
Don Hathaway, named 2025 Kiwanian of the Year, says service has always been part of his divine purpose.
“I always thought that my purpose in life was to serve, serve the people in elected public office. said Hathaway.
The luncheon highlights the club’s ongoing commitment to community service.
