FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The California Board of Parole Hearings has denied parole for the convicted Tower District serial rapist who terrorized women during the 90s.

On Friday, The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office announced parole was denied for convicted Tower District serial rapist Rudolph Martin Acosta. Instead, he was given a seven-year denial, which is the maximum denial of parole.

“This decision honors the courage of the survivors who bravely came forward, including Mirna Garcia, whose voice and advocacy have been instrumental in this process,” wrote Fresno County DA Lisa Smittcamp in a statement sent to YourCentralValley.com Friday.

In 1991, Acosta was sentenced to 78 years in state prison for sexually assaulting at least nine women, ages 16 to 30, in the Tower District area. One of his victims is Mirna Garcia, who said the trauma she experiences will never go away and she “will never be able to live in peace.”

The crimes Acosta committed were calculated, violent, and left deep, lasting trauma on the women he targeted. Our office remains committed to standing with victims — not just at trial, but for the rest of their lives.

I want to commend Deputy District Attorneys Karen Mitchell and Esmeralda Garcia for their dedication in preparing and presenting this case. Their work is a testament to the mission of our Parole Unit, which continues to fight for justice long after the courtroom lights dim.
Lisa Smittcamp

Acosta was eligible for parole under California’s “youthful offender” law because he was 25 at the time of the attacks, but the DA’s office was against it. In 2019, Acosta was also denied parole, failing to appear in court and commissioners said they would have wanted to discuss what steps he’s taken to identify “triggers” to his behavior.
