Multiple CBD apartment residents evacuated following 2-alarm fire

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Fire Department were on the scene of a early morning fire in the Central Business District.

Around 12:34 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, firefighters responded to an apartment fire in the 800 block of Gravier Street.

Responding NOFD officials located the fire on the seventh floor of the 14-story high-rise and found food left unattended on a stove in the apartment’s kitchen.

The flames were suppressed by the building automatic sprinkler system that kept it from spreading past the kitchen but caused significant water damage to multiple levels of the building, according to firefighters.

NOFD officials said 135 residents were evacuated from the building as a precaution for crews to secure the scene and begin mitigation efforts.

A total of 18 NOFD units carrying 45 fire officials were able to get the situation under control by 1:02 a.m.

The confirmed cause of the fire was noted as unattended cooking. There were no injuries reported.
