APD officials say both initiatives help improve emergency response times, reduce false alarms, and support criminal investigations—ultimately contributing to a safer Alexandria.
Alarm Registration Now Required
All residential and commercial alarm system users within city limits are required to register their systems with the Alexandria Police Department.
“This registration ensures officers have accurate, up-to-date information to respond more effectively in emergencies,” the department said in a release. Benefits of registration include faster police response, reduced false alarm fees, and improved support for investigations.
To register, residents can fill out the Alarm Registration Form online with current contact and property details.
Camera Registration Voluntary, But Encouraged
While not required, APD strongly encourages residents and business owners to voluntarily register their security camera systems. This registry helps officers quickly identify where surveillance footage may be available during or after a crime.
“Your camera could provide key evidence that helps solve a crime or prevent another,” the department said.
Registration involves filling out a Camera Registration Form with basic details about the camera’s location and coverage. APD emphasized that no direct access to footage is granted and all information is kept private and secure.
Strengthening Community Safety
“These programs are about partnership,” the department said. “When residents register their alarms or cameras, they’re taking an active role in protecting their neighborhoods.”
Officials also stressed that all registered information is handled confidentially and used solely for public safety purposes.
