The Bell County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook that at 9:23 p.m., Shane Ray, 23, approached the checkpoint at the intersection of Highway 92 and Highway 25E. When deputies asked him for his license, he claimed he didn’t have one. Ray reportedly gave the deputy a fake name and said he had a suspended license.
Court documents note that as the deputy approached his cruiser to run Ray’s license plate, he was seen driving away quickly, running over the deputy’s foot in the process.
The sheriff’s office said that, after a chase down 25E, deputies were able to box Ray in and arrest him. During a search of the vehicle, deputies said two bags of marijuana and nearly $2,000 were found.
Arrest records show he was booked into the Bell County Detention Center, where he was charged with:
- Driving on a suspended license
- Giving an officer false identifying information
- First-degree fleeing or evading the police in a motor vehicle
- First-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer – two counts
- Second-degree assault of a police officer
- Trafficking less than 8 ounces of marijuana
Records show that Ray had a failure to appear warrant as well.
The injured deputy went to Pineville Hospital for treatment and was released, according to the sheriff’s office.
Court documents note that he’s being held on a $10,000 cash bond.
