Deceased veterans receive gold stars from their hometowns for their sacrifice

DURAND, Ill. (WTVO) — Stateline veterans who lost their lives defending the U.S. received gold stars from their hometowns for their sacrifice.

The dedication of these memorial blocks is intended to forever honor and preserve the memory of the sacrifices made by our local heroes.

Winnebago County Board Chairman Joseph Chiarelli and Durand Mayor Sheila Hoffman unveiled the gold stars on multiple blocks around their respective areas of governance.

“Our country is a great nation and worth fighting for. They’ll understand why we’re honoring these veterans, and maybe they’ll also think about how horrible war is and work for peace,” said Gold Star Post Member Tom Walsh.

The Durand American Legion Gold Star Post 676 held and organized the event.
