BART Green Line service won’t be restored until next week, officials say

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — After being knocked out due to a fire at San Leandro Station earlier this week, BART Green Line service isn’t projected to be restored until next week. On Tuesday, an electrical fire that damaged trackside control equipment caused widespread service disruptions.

Witnesses described huge flames and sparks flying at the station around 5 a.m. Limited BART service was restored Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. with trains running from Berryessa and Bay Fair to Dublin/Pleasanton stations.

However, service on BART’s Green Line has remained suspended with Bay Area Rapid Transit tweeting that it is not projected to return until Tuesday, May 27.

“All 50 stations are open and riders can get to all locations but there is no Green Line service,” BART tweeted.

Tuesday’s widespread outage was the second this month. On May 9, BART experienced a system-wide shutdown right in the midst of the Friday morning commute. That outage, which was related to the transit system’s network devices, was resolved by around 9:15 a.m.

The two back-to-back instances come at an inopportune time for the transit agency, which is trying to lure riders back and may find itself in need of taxpayer funds to remain viable in the meantime.
