Severe weather alert: Big Country faces storms Thursday-Friday

BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Heads up, Big Country, another round of severe weather is on the way. A storm system is expected to move through the area from Thursday afternoon, May 22, to early Friday morning, May 23, potentially bringing strong to severe storms.

The Storm Prediction Center currently places most of our region under a Marginal Risk (Level 1/5), with some of our eastern counties under a Slight Risk (Level 2/5). This means that isolated strong storms are possible for this event.

You can expect heavy rain, strong winds, and hail as potential threats. The risk of a tornado is low because there isn’t much deep moisture present; however, a brief tornado spin-up cannot be completely ruled out.

Storms look to move in early Thursday afternoon and linger into the early morning hours Friday, so make sure to have ways to get alerts while you sleep. The good news? Even with the models expected to change a little, it is safe to say most of the activity will clear out before the morning commute.

While rain chances this spring have helped some areas, parts of the Big Country are still running dry. Tomorrow’s storms could give some of us a much-needed brief relief.
