Elevated tornado risk for parts of the Big Country

BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Residents across the Big Country should stay weather-aware tonight as severe thunderstorms are expected to impact parts of our viewing area.

Almost half of our region is currently under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather, meaning numerous storms are likely to be strong to severe.

What does this mean for us?

In simple terms, we could see all types of severe weather tonight. This includes:

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Damaging winds
  • Large hail to Very Large Hail
  • An isolated tornado or two, where the elevated risk is.

Stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

What does the timeline of these storms look like?

Tonight’s Timeline:

  • Thursday 3:00 p.m.
An individual cell develops and moves towards the northwest part of the Big Country.
  • Thursday 5:00 p.m.
Activity continues, less widespread, but more likely for strong individual storms.
  • Thursday 7:00 p.m.
New development out west intensifies and begins to move back towards our northwest counties.
  • Thursday 10:00 p.m.
Storms continue, before tapering off before midnight. Activity remains concentrated chiefly to the northwest for most of this event.

As of 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, the National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Knox County and a Tornado Watch for King, Stonewall, Kent, Scurry, and Mitchell; however, more counties may be added in the coming hours.
