Severe weather in the Big Country: What you need to know

BIG COUNTRY, TEXAS (KTAB/KRBC) – Heading into Thursday night, we’re gearing up for the start of a couple of active days with strong to severe storms. Let’s break down the details.

For Thursday, October 23, storms are expected to develop in our northwestern counties as early as 7:30 p.m., likely staying north of the I-20 corridor through the evening.

Overnight and into Friday morning, a few scattered storms may linger before more widespread activity ramps up through the late morning and early afternoon.

By Friday afternoon and evening (October 24), storms are expected to become more organized and widespread, potentially impacting after-school pickups, commutes home, football kickoffs, and Friday night plans. This strong to severe storm activity will likely continue through much of the evening before gradually moving to the south/southeast and clearing by early Saturday morning.

Severe Weather Threat:

We’re tracking severe weather potential on both Thursday and Friday.

Thursday evening:

Our northwestern counties are under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for strong to severe storms.

  • Main threats: Wind gusts up to 50 to 65+ mph and pocket change to golf ball-sized hail.
  • Low tornado risk, but an isolated spin-up can’t be ruled out.

Friday:

The entire Big Country will be under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms.

  • Main threats: Straight-line winds of 60 to 70+ mph, quarter to egg-sized hail, and a low tornado threat with isolated, brief spin-ups possible.

Heavy Rain & Flooding

Some storms may produce heavy rainfall, leading to localized flooding in low-lying areas.

Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown if you encounter flooded roads.

Stay weather aware by downloading the BCH ToGo App and keep tuned to your local meteorologists for the latest updates as these storms develop.
